The Hiring Asymmetry No One Is Talking About
In the first half of 2026, Indian IT services firms — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra — collectively cut more than 40,000 jobs and significantly reduced fresher intake. In the same period, Global Capability Centres (GCCs) — the India-based engineering, product, and operations hubs of multinational companies — added 4.5 lakh positions.
The two markets are running in opposite directions simultaneously. If you're in IT services or targeting IT services, you're competing in a contracting market. If you can make yourself competitive for GCC roles, you're competing in an expanding one.
What Is a GCC?
A Global Capability Centre (also called a Global In-house Centre or GIC) is a subsidiary of a multinational company that operates in India as a dedicated technology, product, data, or operations centre — not as an outsourcing vendor, but as an internal part of the company.
Goldman Sachs Bengaluru is a GCC — it's staffed by Goldman Sachs employees building Goldman Sachs products, not a vendor delivering work to Goldman Sachs. Apple India engineering, Google India, Microsoft India Development Centre, Amazon India, JPMorgan Hyderabad, Walmart Global Tech — all GCCs in the same sense.
The distinction matters because it changes the employment relationship. GCC employees are company employees, not contractors. They work on the company's actual products and systems. The career trajectory, the technical standards, and the compensation are fundamentally different from IT services.
What GCCs Pay vs IT Services
For equivalent experience levels, GCC compensation in 2026 runs approximately 40–70% higher than IT services for engineering roles. A software engineer with 5 years of experience who earns 15–18 LPA at an IT services firm might earn 24–30 LPA at a second-tier GCC and 35–50+ LPA at a Tier 1 GCC (Goldman Sachs, Google, Amazon).
Total compensation at Tier 1 GCCs includes significant equity components — RSUs for tech and product roles are standard. This makes the gap even larger in total compensation terms, though equity value depends on parent company performance.
What GCCs Are Actually Hiring For in 2026
Software engineering (all levels)
The largest category. GCCs need backend, frontend, full-stack, and mobile engineers — often with specific tech stack requirements tied to what the parent company uses. Goldman Sachs India primarily uses Java and their proprietary Slang/SecDB systems. JPMorgan India uses Java, Python, and increasingly Rust. Apple India focuses on Swift and C++. Know the tech stack before applying.
Data and ML engineering
Most large GCCs have significant data infrastructure buildout happening in India. Data engineers (Python, Spark, dbt, Airflow, cloud data warehouses), ML engineers (PyTorch, TensorFlow, MLOps), and analytics engineers (SQL, dbt, BI tools) are in consistent demand. This is the highest-shortage category — qualified data engineers who can build and maintain production pipelines are extremely difficult to hire.
Product management
A smaller but growing category. GCCs are increasingly building genuine product teams in India rather than just engineering execution. Product managers at GCCs work on global products and report into global product hierarchies. The bar is high — GCCs want PMs with data-driven decision making experience, strong communication, and ability to influence without authority across a distributed global team.
DevOps and site reliability
Platform engineering, infrastructure, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD — GCCs are building India-based reliability and platform teams at scale. This is a specific hiring spike in 2026 driven by cloud migration projects and infrastructure modernisation.
Cybersecurity
Financial services GCCs (Goldman, JPMorgan, Citi, HSBC, Deutsche Bank) have significant security talent demand in India. Security operations, penetration testing, cloud security, and GRC roles are consistently unfilled.
The Path From IT Services to GCC
The experience gap is smaller than you think
Many IT services professionals underestimate their own qualifications for GCC roles, believing that their work on client projects is somehow less credible than product company experience. This belief is often incorrect. IT services professionals with strong fundamentals, good communication, and demonstrable technical depth are actively recruited by GCCs — particularly for mid-level roles where the transition from vendor mindset to product mindset is a 3–6 month adjustment.
The certification path
The fastest path from IT services to GCC consideration is a combination of relevant certifications and a demonstrated technical project. AWS Professional Solutions Architect or GCP Professional Data Engineer takes approximately 3 months to prepare for (10–15 hours per week) and immediately makes your profile visible in GCC ATS systems that filter for certifications.
Target mid-tier GCCs first
The first GCC is hardest — the transition from IT services to a GCC environment comes with an adjustment period. Mid-tier GCCs (Paypal, Uber, LinkedIn, Cisco, SAP Labs) have lower competition than Tier 1 GCCs and provide the internal experience that makes a subsequent move to Tier 1 much more credible. Three to five years at a mid-tier GCC changes the profile of a candidate dramatically.
Network into it
Many GCC positions at mid-level are never publicly listed. They're filled through LinkedIn networks, referrals from current employees, and direct recruiter outreach. Building a visible professional presence on LinkedIn and connecting with engineers currently working at your target GCCs is the highest-leverage action for a transition role.
How to Find and Apply to GCC Roles
- GCC Index (gccindex.in) — Comprehensive list of all 1,700+ GCCs in India with direct career page links and location breakdown
- LinkedIn — Search "[company name] India careers" or use filters: "Global Capability Centre" + role + city. Many GCC openings are only listed on LinkedIn.
- Direct company career pages — Most Tier 1 GCCs (Goldman Sachs, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon) have India-specific career portals. Goldman's is careers.goldmansachs.com with an India filter. Apply directly — don't rely on aggregators.
- Referrals — The single most effective channel for Tier 1 GCC positions. Finding a referral contact through LinkedIn for even a quick conversation significantly increases your resume's visibility.
ATS and Resume for GCC Applications
GCCs use a range of ATS systems — Workday (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan), Greenhouse (tech companies), and iCIMS (financial services). The same ATS optimisation principles apply: single-column format, standard headers, keyword matching against the specific JD.
The key difference for GCC resumes: quantification is even more important. GCC hiring teams expect to see measurable impact — not just tasks completed. "Maintained payment processing system" is inadequate. "Maintained payment processing system handling 2M daily transactions with 99.97% uptime across 3 years, including a major infrastructure migration completed with zero customer-facing downtime" is what makes GCC shortlists.
Use Hyrenora's ATS checker to identify keyword gaps against specific GCC JDs before submitting. GCC roles often have specific technical requirements that don't appear in your general resume — finding and filling those gaps before submission dramatically improves filter passage rates.
