The Situation Is Difficult — and Solvable
If you graduated from an Indian engineering college in 2025 or early 2026 and don't have a job yet, you are not alone and you are not the problem. TCS offered jobs to thousands of batch 2024 students that were deferred for over a year. Wipro's fresher hiring dropped to near-zero in several quarters. Tech Mahindra, Cognizant, and HCL all significantly cut fresher intake. The macro headwind is real.
But people are still getting IT jobs in India right now. The companies, the channels, and the profile they're looking for are different from the traditional IT services campus path. Here is what's actually working.
Shift Your Target: Where Hiring Is Actually Happening
Global Capability Centres (GCCs)
While IT services firms (TCS, Infy, Wipro) are cutting, GCCs are expanding. Goldman Sachs Bengaluru, JPMorgan's technology centre in Hyderabad, Apple India, Google, Microsoft, Walmart Global Tech, Amazon India, and over 1,700 other GCCs collectively added 4.5 lakh positions in 2026. GCCs often hire freshers for well-defined roles: data engineering, software development, QA automation, DevOps, and cloud ops.
The catch: GCC roles are more competitive and have higher technical bars than IT services entry-level roles. They want to see real skills — projects on GitHub, certifications, demonstrable output. Apply to GCCs with the strongest possible technical profile, not just a formatted resume.
Product startups and mid-stage companies
Funded Indian startups (Series A and above) and mid-sized product companies (10–500 employees) are hiring. They don't show up on campus. They list on LinkedIn, AngelList (now Wellfound), Cutshort, and their own career pages. These roles often pay less than IT services at entry-level but provide much faster skill development and better career trajectory for motivated freshers.
IT services tier 2 and tier 3
While TCS and Infosys are contracting, smaller IT services firms — Mastech Digital, NIIT Technologies, Hexaware, Cyient, KPIT — have maintained or grown their fresher pipelines. These often hire off-campus through Naukri, Freshersworld, and LinkedIn, and have lower competition than the Tier 1 firms.
Build a Portfolio That Speaks for You
The single most impactful thing a job-seeker without experience can do in 2026 is build a portfolio of real, working projects. Here is what that looks like concretely:
GitHub profile with active projects
2–3 deployed or near-complete projects with documentation, clean commits, and a README that explains what the project does and how to run it. Technical recruiters at product companies and GCCs actively check GitHub during screening. An empty profile or a profile with only forked repositories is a negative signal. An active profile with original code is a powerful differentiator.
Projects that stand out: end-to-end web applications, ML models with real datasets, automation scripts that solve a real problem, API integrations with real services. Scale doesn't matter as much as completeness and clarity.
A deployed URL
If your project is a web application, deploy it. Render, Railway, Vercel, and Netlify all have free tiers. A live URL that the interviewer can visit demonstrates that you can take code to production — not just write it. Most freshers have code on their laptop that never gets deployed. Deployment is a small step that creates a big signal.
One certification
AWS Cloud Practitioner (roughly 40 hours of study, ₹8,000 exam fee) or Google Associate Cloud Engineer are now standard expectations at GCCs and many product companies. NPTEL courses (free, with a nominal exam fee) are well-regarded by Indian IT companies for domain knowledge. Completing one respected certification demonstrates structured learning and provides keywords that ATS systems score on.
Application Strategy: Where to Apply and How
Naukri.com — optimise your profile aggressively
Naukri's search algorithm weights profile freshness, headline keywords, and profile completeness. Update your profile at least once a week (even a small edit counts as a refresh). Your headline should include the exact roles you're targeting: "Java Developer Fresher | Spring Boot | MySQL | Open to Work." Apply within 48 hours of every relevant posting — ghost job rates on Naukri rise sharply after day 5.
LinkedIn — connect, not just apply
On LinkedIn, the "Easy Apply" button is used by thousands of candidates for every posting. A better approach: find the hiring manager or HR contact at the company, connect with a brief personalised note, and mention you've also applied through the portal. Not everyone responds, but response rates for direct outreach consistently outperform portal-only applications by 3–5×.
Unstop and Hackathons
Unstop (formerly Dare2Compete) hosts hiring challenges run directly by companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Deloitte, Capgemini, and hundreds of product companies. These competitions serve as direct hiring pipelines — performance in the challenge often bypasses normal resume screening. For freshers who are technically strong but don't have strong college brand names, this is a legitimate fast path.
Direct applications to company career pages
Many smaller companies don't post on Naukri or LinkedIn — they only hire through their own career page. Bookmark and check career pages weekly for companies you're interested in. Set up Google Alerts for "[company name] careers" or "[company name] hiring" to get notified when new postings appear.
What to Do While You Wait
The worst thing you can do during a slow job search is stop building skills. The best thing you can do is continue building projects and building an online presence that compounds over time.
Write about what you're building
A technical blog post explaining how you built a project — posted on Hashnode, Dev.to, or Medium — does three things: it demonstrates communication skills, it adds to your Google footprint (recruiters who Google your name find professional content), and it often generates inbound interest from companies looking for developers who can explain their work.
Contribute to open source
Small contributions to open source projects (bug fixes, documentation improvements, test additions) provide GitHub activity signals and give you exposure to professional codebases. Hacktoberfest is a structured entry point in October, but you don't need to wait for it.
Apply strategically with ATS optimisation
Every application you send should be tailored to the specific role. Run your resume against the job description using an ATS checker to identify missing keywords before you submit. The 5 minutes you spend per application tailoring keywords makes a measurable difference in callback rates — especially for fresher applications where you're competing with hundreds of other candidates with similar educational profiles.
Hyrenora's ATS Resume Checker is free to use — paste the JD, upload your resume, and it shows you the exact keyword gaps to fix. For freshers, this is one of the highest-leverage 5 minutes you can spend on any application.
