What Is HireVue and Why Does It Matter

HireVue is a video interview platform used by over 700 major employers globally — including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Unilever, Delta Air Lines, and Vodafone — to screen candidates before live interviews. In a HireVue assessment, you record video responses to a series of questions on your own time, without a live interviewer. The recordings are processed by AI before being reviewed by a human recruiter.

In the first half of 2026, HireVue reported that over 50 million interviews had been conducted through its platform. If you're applying to large employers, the probability of encountering a HireVue or equivalent AI video interview is close to certain. Understanding how it works is no longer optional.

What HireVue Actually Measures

HireVue has published substantial documentation about its assessment methodology, including third-party validity and fairness studies. The current system scores on three primary dimensions:

1. Language and Communication

Your transcribed speech is analysed for:

  • Structured communication — Does your answer have a clear beginning, middle, and end? Do you complete your thoughts?
  • Vocabulary and complexity — Is your language appropriate for the role and level you're applying for? Are you using domain-relevant terminology?
  • Filler word frequency — Excessive "um," "uh," "like," and "you know" reduces communication quality scores. Some fillers are human and normal; a frequency above roughly 1 per 15–20 words is measurably penalised.
  • Keyword relevance — Responses are scored for the presence of competency keywords relevant to the role. A leadership question that includes "cross-functional," "influence," "stakeholder," and "delivered" typically scores higher on leadership competency than one that doesn't.

2. Emotional and Personality Indicators

HireVue's AI analyses facial expressions, vocal tone, and speaking pace. This is the most controversial aspect of the platform and has been significantly scaled back after regulatory scrutiny — Illinois banned AI-only facial screening, and HireVue has moved to treating facial analysis as one signal among many rather than a primary scoring factor.

What still matters: speaking at a natural, clear pace (neither rushed nor unnaturally slow), maintaining natural eye contact with the camera (not the screen), and a tone that's appropriate for professional conversation — engaged rather than flat.

3. Answer Content and Competency Scoring

Responses are evaluated against job-relevant competency frameworks. For each question, there is a set of competencies being assessed — leadership, communication, analytical thinking, customer focus, etc. Your answer is scored on the presence of evidence for each relevant competency.

The STAR method (Situation → Task → Action → Result) maps closely to what HireVue's system scores as high-quality responses: a clear context, individual ownership, specific actions, and a measurable result.

The Question Types You'll Encounter

Behavioural questions

"Tell me about a time when you had to work with a difficult stakeholder." "Describe a situation where you delivered under significant time pressure." These are the most common and most important. Answer using STAR format. Make the Action section the longest and most specific. Always end with a quantified or clearly described result.

Situational questions

"Imagine you've just joined a team that is significantly behind on a project. What do you do in your first 30 days?" Situational questions test judgment and process thinking rather than past experience. Structure your answer: identify the priorities, explain your reasoning, describe the actions in sequence, and state the expected outcome.

Competency questions

"What is your approach to managing competing priorities?" These test process knowledge more than specific experience. Be concrete — describe the actual framework or method you use (not "I prioritise based on impact and urgency" in the abstract, but "I keep a shared priorities document with my manager, review it weekly, and flag explicitly when a new request requires trading off against an existing commitment").

Role-specific questions

Technical or domain questions specific to the role. Prepare by reviewing the job description for the role's specific requirements and thinking through your relevant experience for each.

Technical Setup Matters More Than You Think

HireVue's AI includes environmental quality signals in its processing. Candidates with poor audio or video quality create additional noise in the evaluation. The minimum setup:

  • Lighting — Natural light from in front of you (not behind), or a ring light or desk lamp positioned in front. Poor lighting makes facial expression signals unreliable and creates a bad first impression with the human reviewer who watches later.
  • Background — Plain, uncluttered. A blank wall is ideal. A bookshelf is fine. A busy or distracting background is not.
  • Camera position — Eye level, not looking down (which reads as disengaged). Position your laptop or phone so the camera is roughly at eye height.
  • Eye contact — Look at the camera lens, not at the screen. The screen is at eye level; the camera is typically 2–3 inches above it. Looking at the screen while talking looks like looking slightly downward to a viewer — not ideal for presence.
  • Internet connection — Wired connection if possible. Video quality disruptions affect scoring and create a poor impression on human review.

Preparation Approach

Practice on camera, not on paper

Recording yourself and watching it back is the single highest-value preparation activity. Seeing your own filler word patterns, timing, and eye contact is immediately actionable. Most people are surprised by how different they appear on camera from how they feel in the moment.

Prepare 8–10 STAR stories for your core competencies

Leadership, conflict, delivery under pressure, failure and learning, cross-functional collaboration, data-driven decisions, customer focus, and ambiguity — prepare one concrete story for each. Stories can be adapted across multiple questions; having them ready means you're not composing them on the spot.

Do a full practice run

HireVue offers practice questions on most platforms. Do a full practice run in your actual setup (same room, same lighting, same device) before your real assessment. Identify any technical issues and resolve them.

Use AI for mock interview practice

Running mock HireVue-style interviews with an AI that evaluates your answers against the criteria above is faster iteration than doing it alone. Hyrenora's AI Career Consultant offers role-specific mock interview sessions where you can practice behavioural questions and get feedback on your STAR structure, keyword coverage, and answer timing before the real thing.
