The Scale of What's Happening
India's tech sector has seen its most significant wave of layoffs since 2009. The numbers as of mid-2026: TCS laid off over 12,000 employees and deferred fresher onboarding for 7+ months. Infosys cut approximately 4,000 roles and closed non-core projects. Wipro, HCL, and Tech Mahindra collectively eliminated several thousand positions. Oracle India — following its global restructuring — laid off over 25,000 employees across its India operations. Smaller companies, vendors, and IT service firms have had quieter rounds that aggregate into an additional 10,000+ affected workers.
When 55,000 professionals in the same sector go to market simultaneously, the job search dynamics change fundamentally. Here is what works when the competition is this dense.
Why the Standard Job Search Doesn't Work Right Now
The standard playbook — update your resume, apply on Naukri, wait — is significantly less effective in a buyer's market for talent. Reasons:
- Naukri listings for popular roles are receiving 300–500+ applications within 72 hours of posting
- Most applicants have similar educational backgrounds and similar company names on their resumes — the differentiators are now subtle
- Ghost job rates are elevated in a downturn as companies post defensively to "see what's available" without active hiring intent
- ATS filtering is more aggressive when inbound volume is high — companies processing 400 applications will set harder keyword filters
To get above the noise, you need to be visible before you apply, better qualified on paper, and more targeted in where you spend your energy.
Strategy 1: Differentiate With Specific Skills, Not Just Experience
In a market flooded with engineers who have 5–10 years at TCS/Infosys/Wipro, your experience level alone doesn't differentiate you. What differentiates you is specific, demonstrable capability that the average laid-off candidate doesn't have.
The skills with the clearest differentiation value in India's 2026 tech market:
- Cloud certifications — AWS Professional Solutions Architect, GCP Professional Data Engineer, Azure Solutions Architect Expert. These are consistently the top credential requests in GCC and product company JDs in India in 2026.
- GenAI and LLM integration — Practical experience building applications with LLMs (RAG, fine-tuning basics, prompt engineering) is in explicit demand across GCCs and product startups. Three months of intensive learning and a deployed project on GitHub is enough to list this credibly.
- Data engineering — Databricks, Apache Spark, dbt, Airflow. Companies building data platforms are actively hiring; the supply of experienced data engineers is lower than the supply of general software engineers.
- DevOps and platform engineering — Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines. GCCs in particular are building infrastructure teams and can't find enough qualified people.
Strategy 2: Target GCCs Specifically
While IT services is contracting, GCCs are expanding. The contrast is stark: IT services firms shed 30,000+ jobs in H1 2026; GCCs added 4.5 lakh jobs across India in the same period. The two markets are operating independently.
GCC roles are more competitive and have higher technical bars than equivalent IT services roles. But they offer better salaries, faster growth, and more interesting technical work. For laid-off IT services professionals with 5+ years of experience, a GCC role is a genuine step up — not a lateral move.
How to find GCC roles:
- Search LinkedIn with filters: "Global Capability Centre" OR "Global In-house Centre" + your target role + Bengaluru/Hyderabad/Pune/Chennai
- The GCC Index (gccindex.in) lists the 1,700+ GCCs operating in India with direct career page links
- Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Walmart Global Tech all actively hire from laid-off IT services professionals — each has a dedicated India careers page
Strategy 3: Get Visible Before You Apply
In a competitive market, the most effective path to an interview is being known before your resume lands. LinkedIn is the primary channel for this:
- Write about what you know — One post per week about your domain expertise, a technical problem you've solved, or a perspective on the industry. 10–15 consistent posts build a professional presence that makes your name recognisable before a recruiter opens your application.
- Connect with hiring managers and tech leads — Not to ask for a job, but to comment intelligently on their posts, share relevant content, and participate in technical discussions. Being a face recruiters recognise before they read your resume changes the evaluation dynamic.
- Engage in technical communities — Stack Overflow answers, GitHub contributions, or participation in Slack communities for your technology stack all create search-discoverable proof of technical credibility.
Strategy 4: Optimise Your Resume for the ATS Filter
When 400 people apply for one role, companies set harder keyword filters in their ATS. A resume that would have cleared filtering in a normal market may be filtered out now.
Before every application:
- Run your resume against the JD using an ATS checker — identify the keyword gap
- Add missing keywords that are genuinely accurate to your experience
- Make sure your resume format is ATS-parseable (single column, standard headers, text PDF)
- Quantify achievements — especially system performance metrics, team sizes, and project scale
Hyrenora's ATS Resume Checker is free and takes under 2 minutes per application — it shows the exact keywords you're missing ranked by importance, and flags formatting issues that would cause your resume to be misread by the most common ATS platforms used in India.
Strategy 5: Be Selective
The natural instinct during a layoff is to apply to everything. The data says the opposite approach performs better: 20 highly targeted, well-tailored applications to roles you're genuinely well-matched for will outperform 200 generic applications by a significant margin.
Before spending time on an application, check:
- When was this posting published? (Applications to postings <5 days old have 3x higher callback rates than applications to postings older than 2 weeks)
- Does this look like a ghost job? (Apply Hyrenora's ghost job criteria: posting age, repetition, company signals)
- Do I meet 70%+ of the stated requirements?
Qualify first, tailor for the ones that pass, move on quickly from the ones that don't. In a layoff market, your energy is the most finite resource. Spend it precisely.
